Module/Blog 11 Assignment: Anatomy of a Scene
Drama
When looking at the films given to me, one that stuck out was the film, "Freaks" Directed by Tod Browning. When viewing this film, it did give off an eerie yet circus feeling to it when I started watching it. Hans was an interesting character that fell for Cleopatra, another circus artist/entertainer, instead of his fiancee, Frieda. Cleopatra, who learns of Hans's mass wealth and decides that she wants to marry him and get someone, Hercules, to kill the little person for the inheritance that she could gain for his death. Since she did marry Hans and after some time Hans fell ill and Cleopatra is trying to poison him. A lot of plot and action went on with this film and did give off an older feeling since this was a 20th-century film. Though it was a little confusing to listen through and to more clearly understand, Cleopatra paid a great price for trying to seduce and take Hans's life away. She was mutilated and changed beyond recognition, to be turned into a "human duck". Frieda and Hans end back up together after all that happened, and the show ended.
Comedy
To start with a film I thought would be more interesting would be "Being John Malovich", directed by Spike Jonze. This film started very interestingly showing off the art of puppetry from Craig Schwartz. Craig tries to find work but doesn't seem to be able to find any with his line of work. Craig tries to find jobs and finds Lester Corp. When looking through this scene of Lester Corp, it was shown that some people had a hard time understanding or talking, like with the receptionist for Lester Corp continuously messing up Craig's name. I thought that was interesting to try and understand. It shows that Craig is misunderstood as himself. He works on the 7 1/2 floor and to a small floor, this floor had to be precisely found with the elevator buttons. Craig went with a strange portal that Craig had found, this portal apparently goes into John Malovich's mind. It shows Craig in a different light, as someone else. This is where he can be understood and such. He tries to sell the idea with a worker, Maxine for 200$ to try and make money and to try and everyone wants to be in Malovich's mind. This was fairly interesting to see that people wanted to make a profit off of this idea. This film has been a very unique and interesting type of film, it felt like a mix of an older comedy and drama with all the emotion being shown in the film. As a whole, this film shows someone who found something they thought was extraordinary and the feeling that turned into everyone fighting for them wanting to be John Malovich.
This film was more interesting to me than "Freaks".
